Project: Create a procedure that allows employees to respond to a power outage and return power to the radio tower in the absence of officers or management.
Scope: Procedure document, distribution of the document
Contributors: I was taught the basic information and given a series of photographs by my manager, but I created all documents and determined how the information would be dispersed.
Problem: During a time when no management was available, the power to the Bennington Rescue Squad radio tower was lost. There was a solution to this, but only management and select employees who were not working knew this solution. Since no one present knew the solution to this problem, the Rescue Squad had to function without radios until the next morning.
Goals:
- Create a document that explaines how to address a power outage at the radio tower
- Make the document available to all employees
- Ensure that the document could be accessed while there was a power failure
Solution: While my manager was rectifying the previous power outage, I went with him to take notes of the steps performed and asked questions about the process. We took several pictures of important locations for this project. He then gave me the important information including lock combinations to begin the project. I typed the instructions and attached the pictures. I then had an employee unfamiliar with the process complete the process. The process was printed, laminated, and secured to the wall in the ambulance bay. Another copy was placed in a process binder in the vehicle used in the process. The process was uploaded to the employee portal.
After the next power outage in which the process was used, I collected feedback from the employee who used it and made changes.
Results: After the initial use, it was found that not all employees knew where the tower was located. I created a short link that could be typed into a phone to pull up directions if internet was available. I also included step-by-step driving directions if cellular service was also down.
